Why dont people understand that we dont have an iron dome like Israel. Critical Infrastructure is protected by Air defense systems but not all of Pakistan. Even in the presence of air defense systems these cruise missiles are difficult to counter because of the reasons the OP mentioned.

Indians are proud of Brahmos because it’s a domestic supersonic (bordering hypersonic) missile that outperforms everything that Pakistan has. Apparently due to its domestic nature it’s a pride thing that proves that India has the expertise to build such Ashms. 

Downsides include: it’s massive (modified flankers can only carry 1), unreliable and inaccurate.

Since it just says "missile" and not "cruise missile", I could 20 different systems that can be considered more "deadly". From SRBM-ICBM.

 SM-2, SM-6, and ESSM (all part of the AEGIS system) regularly intercepts GQM 163A Coyote. Which is a highly maneuverable Mach 4 Supersonic cruise missile target. Brahmos can definitely be intercepted, sure it'll be more difficult to do so compared to an older block of Harpoon, but it is no where near being immune to air defense.

China on the other hand does have missile (YJ-12, CJ/DF-100, etc) that is comparable to brahmos.

OP, your first mistake was listening to an Indian about something that sounds good about India. Indians are by and large, super patriotic. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it makes them very susceptible to both hyperbole and propaganda.

BrahMos is an interesting weapon, especially for the Indians to have  developed (in concert with Russia), but it's not exactly groundbreaking.

BrahMos is basically p-800 oinks but faster. As an anti-ship sea skimmer its a viable product (provided its targeting and electronics works). As a land target its a waste to pay for both a booster and ramjet for 300kg over 500km, just use normal solid rocket missiles instead.

Most countries dont concentrate on the speed of the missile past a certain point and instead focuses on electronics and targeting to make sure they hit what they are suppose to hit, especially if its a moving target. 

In terms of ramjet technology, the way forward seems to be integrated booster/jet system. China has YJ-12, Europeans have Meteor. In that regard BrahMos is behind.

I feel like the level of discussion is shallow in the comment section. We cant just look at if its good or bad by comparing Brahmos with every missile. For example, think about Apache and LCH made by India. Apache is a better attack chopper any-day anytime. But LCH performs its job better at high altitude. The Indian Airforce had to move Apache out of Ladakh because it struggled with altitude and did crash. Whereas LCH performs well because it was designed for high altitude warfare.  
Similarly, coming back to Brahmos, if you consider different roles and purposes, its an interesting missile because it gives you a range of over 500km according to some source and has a speed of mach 3. The most likely use for India here is protecting Malacca straight and on the west front putting a naval blockade on Pakistan at Karachi. Based on the range and speed. One missile would take less than 12 mins to reach its target. The missile is highly accurate and at terminal stage follows a sea skimming trajectory. It also makes a S manoeuvre at terminal stage. So India will likely use these off its Andaman Islands and Gujarat coasts. It can be launched from ground which appears to be the safest one as quantity isnt a problem there. Air launched version gives a capability but only one can be carried per sukhoi 30 and is a modified one with less range so doesnt make for a good idea. And as for sea launch version, I dont find it a logical reason to attack another ship using anti ship missile from your ship as you are equally on a threat radar of being sunk then hence it may be used only for defence purpose from a ship to retaliate against any first attack. Given the use case, it is a good missile as it covers most of bay of bengal and arabian sea. India is not a white water navy so it wont need to travel all the way to Taiwan to attack Chinese ships. So Brahmos is a good deterrent against an offensive ship approaching towards an entity of strategic interest. Its definitely a capable missile and will hit its target if fired in some bunch. For Eg when one had misfired towards pakistan, they really turned helpless and didnt really had anything to counter it (I do consider china is not pakistan). The missile at the end just fell to ground. Luckily it did not have any warhead in it. S maneuver at terminal stage is definitly one highly non-predictive move and will be difficult for anti missile tech to intercept.  
As for US having similar missiles, they dont have one because its not needed. The reason why US might be using such missiles will be in offensive roles as they are mostly there protecting things like Taiwan or middle east etc when they are far away from their own shores. A better tool than supersonic cruise missile is a stealth aircraft, which can literally fly close to the target bomb it and return without getting noticed. US had the tech to build one if needed. In terms of accuracy surely Brahmos is better as Indian missiles are good with accuracy but consider that with such missiles accuracy is not a factor, reaching the target is. Brahmos is not hitting a dart board somewhere, its built to hit ships.

Brahmos isnt some wanderwuffen weapon, its just different approach to what west AShM prefer ( Anti Ship Missile ) 

West approach was to fly low and slow, avoid detection to avoid self defense suite of ship where as soviet approach was to fly fast to dodge a ships self defenses 

Both of them have their own pros and cons

So first off, that is **super** sonic, not hypersonic.  There is a BrahMos II that is boosted to Mach7-8 (hypersonic region) but the normal version is max Mach 3 and pretty sure it's not hitting Mach 3 in level flight at low altitude.  The reported mach 3 was in a dive from an at-altitude release.  For things that are supersonic, many air defense systems have a decent chance of interception, including the latest S300/400 and pretty much every medium or theatre western system.  Fighters have the same speed and in many cases more maneuverability but they are vulnerable to all of these systems.  

It's also really really heavy for the payload and range.  An Su-30 can only carry one and that is with undercarriage modifications.

Bear in mind American military strategy contrary to popular chatter is Not centered on Defense, but rather Revenge   The administrators and decision makers, have hardware and well strategized retaliation worked out, they really don't care about the masses of the general population.

While I do understand the worries of Europe saying India is "funding" Russia with these collaborations and trades, but unfortunately they don't see India's position. Who should India rely on? US? They are choking several projects by delaying the delivery and playing double games. India is in need of these technology transfers to protect itself without any setbacks. It's already 15 years behind in terms of certain technology departments. Except for Russia and Israel, no other countries are willing to do these.

The title is a bit weird. They used an abandoned ship as a target dummy for the missile. The title makes it seem like the missile exploded on the same ship it was being fired from.

And second of all, it's just a missile test. Not that big of a deal. People were already aware of the capabilities of the BrahMos. Unless this is meant as a show of force for hostile nations, and to attract potential customers like the Philippines, in which case I suppose it's a positive.
